Free
As players buy Hellgate London, they will be able to access the online component of the game out of the box, without any associated monthly fees. You will be able to play for as long as you want without ever having to pay a fee. The multiplayer component includes all that is available in single player (co-op) and multiplayer specific things such as lockers, auction houses and the ability to join guilds. All of this is done on a secure server. However, the free version is complemented by what is referred to as the "Elite" multiplayer, this is not free. Non-subscribing players can play alongside subscribers, but do not have access to additional content specifically created for Elites. A point of contention has been Elite items, of which non-subscribing players do not have access to. The name is misleading, while these items are different, they are not necessarily better than what is available in free version.

Elite
Players wishing to access the additional multiplayer components of the game will have to fork over $9.95/month. This will buy you access to Elite only areas, Elite equipment, content updates and more. The content updates make up the backbone of this online model, as the developers plan to have at least 40% of their team working on new content for Elites. This will include everything from new areas to new classes and items. Major content additions will occur one per quarter (3months). While the details have yet to be worked out, players that subscribe and then un-subscribe will no longer have access to their Elite equipment, but these items do not disapear, rather they just become unavailable.
